About the Region
West Africa's Environmental Rights Context
West Africa encompasses some of the continent's most significant natural resource endowments — from the oil fields of Nigeria and Ghana to the mineral wealth of Guinea and Mali. Yet communities living alongside these resources often bear the greatest environmental and social costs while seeing the fewest benefits.
Environmental defenders across the region face growing risks: criminalization, intimidation, and in some cases violence for speaking out about pollution, displacement, and the failure of governments and corporations to uphold community rights.
ERA's work in West Africa centers on building the coalition of organizations, defenders, and communities needed to push for a binding regional agreement — one that would guarantee access to information, public participation, and justice for every community affected by environmental decisions.
The sub-region's civil society has a strong tradition of environmental advocacy, and ERA's West Africa hub is building on that foundation to advance a coordinated, African-led response to the environmental rights crisis.
