About ERA
Who We Are
The Environmental Rights Africa (ERA) Initiative is a continent-wide coalition of more than 55 civil society organizations, environmental and human rights defenders, and international partners working collectively to advance a regional environmental rights legal framework for Africa.
Founded 2021
Launched from a shared recognition that Africa needed a coordinated, African-led response.
At its core, ERA is grounded in one conviction: the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment is fundamental. And the communities most affected by environmental harm must be at the center of the decisions shaping their land, their resources, and their future.
ERA promotes transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance as the foundation of how that should work.
Our Mission
ERA is dedicated to building a continent-wide, grassroots movement to advance environmental rights in Africa through advocacy, coalition-building, and community-led action that drives legal and policy change.
Our Vision
An Africa where environmental rights are upheld in law and practice — empowering communities, particularly the most vulnerable, to participate in decision-making and share equitably in the benefits of natural resources.
Why Environmental Rights Matter
Africa stands at a critical crossroads.
As the climate crisis intensifies and pressure on natural resources grows, environmental defenders — the people protecting land, water, forests, and communities — are increasingly under attack. They're often the last line of defense for vulnerable populations, and they're paying for it with their freedom, their safety, sometimes their lives.
Speaking out against environmental harm is getting more dangerous, not less. Toxic mining. Unchecked oil extraction. Unlawful arrests. Violent crackdowns. The reported numbers of killed defenders are already alarming — and the real toll is likely higher.
In Liberia, millions of gallons of toxic waste discharged into waterways exposed communities to harm with little accountability. When residents protested, they were met with arrests, abuse, and denial of due process. The same pattern repeats across the continent — from the assassination of community leaders opposing extractive projects to the criminalization of peaceful protest under vague, abusive laws.
"Environmental rights aren't just a legal issue. They're a matter of justice, accountability, and survival."
ERA, Why We Do This Work
This is the reality that demands change.
Africa needs more than fragmented protections. It needs a coherent regional response — a legal Environmental Rights Agreement that guarantees access to information, public participation, and justice, with explicit protections for environmental defenders. This instrument would turn commitments into enforceable obligations for states and corporations alike.
How We're Organized
Governance
ERA's strength lies in its inclusive, transparent, representative governance model — built to reflect the diversity of the continent and the grassroots nature of the movement.
Day-to-Day Operations
The Secretariat
Hosted by Green Advocates International (Liberia), the Secretariat leads day-to-day coordination and implementation — keeping the coalition moving between major convenings.
Strategic Oversight
The Steering Committee
Five regional anchors, six heads of Working Groups, and two international observers — providing strategic direction and ensuring the coalition stays accountable to its members and mission.
The Operational Engine
Regional Anchors & Working Groups
The coalition's front lines — five sub-regional anchors and six specialized Working Groups doing the research, drafting, advocacy, and defender support that drives the campaign forward.
This model keeps ERA true to its mission: a defender-led, African-driven movement that's participatory, effective, and accountable at every level.
Home of the Secretariat
Liberia
ERA's day-to-day coordination is led by the Secretariat, hosted by Green Advocates International, a Liberian-based organization. Liberia isn't just a base of operations — it's also where some of the patterns ERA is fighting have played out directly.
Communities exposed to toxic waste discharge, met with arrests instead of accountability when they spoke up. The same enforcement void ERA is working to close — with a binding regional agreement — made visible in the place where ERA was born.
