About the Region
North Africa's Environmental Rights Context
North Africa faces acute environmental challenges shaped by geography, resource scarcity, and climate change. From water security pressures in Egypt and Sudan to fossil fuel governance in Libya and Algeria, the sub-region sits at a critical nexus between resource wealth and community rights deficits. Civic space restrictions have made environmental advocacy increasingly difficult, with defenders facing heightened risks for challenging extractive industry practices.
ERA's North Africa hub works to build solidarity networks among civil society organizations navigating constrained operating environments — ensuring that voices from the region shape the continental campaign for a binding environmental rights agreement. The sub-region's geographic position bridging sub-Saharan Africa and the Mediterranean also makes it central to discussions on climate migration, desertification, and transboundary environmental governance.
